Each letter of our name, CEIPHERS, stands for one of the values of our company.
The fifth letter H, stands for HELP… and is inspired by the day I became the strongest man I ever was.
One of the hardest lessons to learn in life is to ask for help. It takes a lot to realize you can’t do it on your own and to let go of your pride.
When I embarked on this journey as an entrepreneur, I knew my strengths were in fashion and graphic design. In the beginning, I thought I could do it all by myself. Boy, was I wrong! I remember for the first 6-9 months of starting the business, I felt so inspired, so driven and so focused on building the brand that I would only sleep 4 hours each night before waking up and getting back to work.
I’m sure you can imagine how much of a toll that took on my body and mind. There were countless nights that Rachel would ask me if I’m coming to bed and my response would be, “I’ll come to bed in an hour or so, love.” She would wake up at 7 a.m. to find me still glued to my laptop, working away. On the days that I was tired enough to actually go to bed, the voice in my pillow just kept mumbling away: “You still need to work on this design. Don’t forget to call around to find suitable manufacturers. Remember you have to call sponsors for an upcoming event. And, oh, don’t forget you need to package and prepare product for your next pop-up store.” I couldn’t shut that voice up and there was no way I could get any sleep. Something always needed to be done.
It got to a point where my body just could not handle what I was putting it through. After overworking myself for three days in a row with little to no sleep, I found myself feeling really drowsy and disoriented. I figured, what better time that now to take a nap. I closed my computer and got up to go to the bedroom. Next thing I know everything went black.
I remember opening my eyes and feeling a sharp pain in my head. I had collapsed from fatigue and found myself laying on my living room floor dazed and confused. I couldn’t keep going like this or it would be the death of me. There is no way one person could take on all of this and maintain their sanity. I was still trying to piece everything together when Rachel walked through the door.
The long and short of it is, it took things getting that crazy for me to realize that I needed help — that this was NOT a one-man job. Before I could even ask for help, Rachel stepped up to the plate and said she would take on more of the tasks at hand. From that day on, we have worked even better as partners taking on each challenge together. As we have continued to grow the brand, we quickly realized that we are in fact much stronger when we ask for help from our team members in their respective field, thus allowing us to move forward as a brand and continue to scale.
We can’t say thank you enough to our talented team of helpers — our manufacturing team, marketing team, models, networking organizations and so many more. Without you, there would be no Ceiphers Clothing.
Whether it be your pride, your tunnel vision, focus or fear of rejection that prevents you from asking for help, there comes a time when you will need it. Think of it this way. How often has someone approached you for help? Did you feel that they were imposing on you? Or were you pleased to be asked? For most of us, we are delighted to be able to give someone a helping hand. I know I’m flattered when someone asks me for assistance.
It is silly that we are too proud or too afraid to ask for help when most others are happy to lend a helping hand. In short, whether it is from your friends, family, coworkers or team members do not be afraid to ask for help. After all, closed mouths don’t get fed.
