I’ve always wanted to own my own business. Before Ceiphers Clothing, I had started up another clothing brand in Flagstaff, Arizona. I ultimately sold my shares to my partner because we had different visions for the company. In hindsight, I realize that my previous business was nothing in comparison to what we had created with Ceiphers Clothing.
One afternoon in 2015, Rachel and I were driving back to Phoenix from a trip to visit relatives. I told her I wanted to start a business, but wasn’t sure what to call it or even what the business would do. But I did know what my passions were. Rachel listened, asked questions and helped me find a name for my budding business.
In college, everyone knew me as CJ, rather than Ceiphers. My choices as CJ were less than great and I was heading down a path I knew wasn’t right for me. I knew I wanted to leave the boy behind. I also knew I wanted to provide a better future, both for myself and for my soon-to-be wife.
And just like that – the idea came to me! Ceiphers Clothing. Why not name the business after myself? I was transforming from a boy to a man – from CJ to Ceiphers – and I wanted to own my true name. I didn’t know it yet, but that was the first step in my transformation from the boy I had been into the man I knew I could be.
I’m proud of who I have become and who I am going to become. Much of the credit in my transformation goes to Rachel. Her strength gave me courage. Her warmth and love gave my confidence. Her belief in me helped me believe in myself.
